A Group is a space in BFF where people with similar interests come together to hang out, make plans, and build community.
You can create Groups around any interest or hobby and customize them to match each Group’s personality and needs. The person who creates a Group will automatically be the owner of that Group.
To create a new Group:
- Open the Discover page and tap ‘Groups’ at the top of the screen
- Tap the + button next to ‘Your Groups’ or at the bottom of your Groups list
- Add a Group name and description, choose a theme color, and upload a photo or icon
- Choose whether your Group will be publicly visible and whether approval is required for new members to join
- Select your Group’s location so nearby BFF members can discover it
- If you already have a location set in your profile, this will be selected automatically
- You can change the location by tapping the location name and choosing a new place on the map
- If your Group isn’t tied to a specific area, you can press ‘set location to Everywhere’
- Select up to two topic tags that describe your Group—these help others find it through the Discover page search
- Tap ‘Done’ to create your Group
When you create a Group, it will be pre-populated with four rooms:
- Intros: A default ‘welcome’ chat room that announces when someone joins— a great place for new members to introduce themselves
- Chat Room: A basic Chat Room for everyday conversations
- Events: A Forum Room that can be used to create and discuss upcoming events
- Recs: A forum Room for asking and sharing recommendations, with room for discussion and feedback from the Group.
Group owners can always rename and/or delete the pre-populated rooms and add more rooms too! For more information, check out Creating and editing rooms.
Not seeing your Group in Discover?
If your Group isn’t appearing in Discover, it’s usually for one of the following reasons:
- The Group owner has chosen to hide the Group from public discovery
- The Group doesn’t match the current search filters being used
- The Group doesn’t yet meet the requirements to appear in Discover (for example, low activity or pending member approvals)
If your Group was recently created, it may simply need a bit more activity before it becomes visible in Discover—this is completely normal for new Groups.
In the meantime, we recommend sharing your direct invite link. Invite links will always take people straight to your Group. As members join and start engaging, your Group should begin appearing in Discover.
We’ve designed Discover this way to help ensure members are finding active, engaged communities, while giving new Groups time to build momentum first.
