Rooms are where the real magic happens in your BFF group! They’re where conversations spark and shared moments come to life. With different rooms for different interests or group topics, you can focus on the chats that matter most to you without feeling overwhelmed by everything else.
Room types
Every group can mix and match four types of rooms, depending on what they’re all about:
- 💬 Chat Rooms: Real-time conversations with text, photos, GIFs, videos, and polls—plus mentions, reactions, and replies to keep things lively. You can also create a meetup or an event to bring your people together
- 📝 Forum Rooms: Share posts and updates with richer formatting and filters, like “most recent” or “most commented”
- 📹 Video Rooms: Pop in for a face-to-face hangout with up to 16 people
- 🎧 Audio Rooms: Chat live with up to 99 people. It’s like a group call, but way more fun
Room access
Rooms can have different visibility and joining rules:
- Open Rooms: Everyone can see and join freely
- Locked Rooms: Everyone can see the room name, but you’ll need to be granted access to join
- Secret Rooms: Hidden from view unless you’ve been invited or meet access criteria
You might also see:
- Auto-join Rooms: You’re automatically added when you join the group
- Opt-in Rooms: Available to join manually via “Join more rooms”
- Required Rooms: The group owner has made these rooms mandatory (you can’t leave them, but you can mute notifications anytime if needed)
For guidance on adding, removing, or updating any of these room types within a group, check out Creating and editing Rooms.
Joining rooms
When you join a group, you will automatically be added to some rooms within the group. Groups can add other rooms that you can join in addition to the default rooms you were added to when you joined. How you join a room depends on that room’s access settings.
To join additional rooms:
- View your group’s list of rooms
- Scroll to the bottom of the room list and select ‘Join more rooms’
- Select ‘Join’ next to the room you would like to join
- If the room is an Open room, you will automatically join the room
- If the room is a Locked room, you will be given options on how to unlock that room
- If the room you are looking for is not in the list, it may be a Secret room
Joining locked rooms
All members of the group can see the names of the Locked rooms that exist in the
group, but will need to be given access to join them.
There are three ways to unlock this content:
1. Unlock rooms via ‘Join more rooms’
Select ‘Unlock’ next to the room name and enter your email address. You’ll receive a verification email—just click the link inside to unlock the room and any others tied to that email.
If your email address isn’t on the approved list, it won’t be unlocked. You can:
- Add another email (up to 10 total), or
- Ask the admin to update the email they’ve linked to you in their connected system.
2. Use your subscriber-specific invite link
When your email is added to the approved list for a restricted space, you’ll receive a unique invite link via email.
This link connects your email to your account when you sign in and grants access to the related rooms.
3. Add your related email in Account Settings
Go to Account Settings → Account Info, then add and verify your email. Once verified, you’ll see a notification confirming which rooms have been unlocked.
Make sure to use the same email associated with your outside memberships or the one your admin has on file.
Manually locked rooms
These rooms are manually managed. An individual adds members directly, and there aren’t any automatic unlock rules to join.
To join these rooms, you will be prompted to DM the room owner, who can then
manually add you to the room.
Secret rooms
Only members of the group who are specifically invited to Secret rooms will see
these rooms. They are not visible in the room list or in ‘Join more rooms’ for those
who are not in them.
Secret room access can be managed manually or set up with email or token gating.
Once you meet the gating criteria, you’ll automatically be added to those rooms.
Leaving Rooms
Required vs. Leaveable
Rooms can be set as ‘Required’, which means members can’t leave them, or ‘Leaveable’, which means members can choose to leave whenever they like.
You can always mute notifications from a specific room, no matter the type, but it
can be particularly helpful for required rooms. See Managing notifications for more on how to do this.
From within the room:
- Go to the room you’d like to leave
- Tap the room name at the top of the screen to open the room settings
- Select ‘Leave room’
Note: If this option is greyed out, the room is required and can’t be left, but you can still mute it.
From the room list:
- Long-press the room name in your rooms list
- Select ‘Leave room’
Note: If this option is greyed out, the room is required and can’t be left, but you can still mute it.
