Chat rooms are built for casual, real-time conversations. In a chat room, you can send and reply to messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files; mention other members; react with emojis; pin important messages; and create polls, events, and meetups.
Editing and Deleting Messages
Anyone with ‘Delete messages’ permissions in a group or room can delete messages. You can only edit messages you’ve sent yourself.
To edit or delete a message:
- Press and hold the message to open the action sheet
- Choose ‘Edit’ or ‘Delete’, then confirm
From the action sheet, you can also:
- Add a reaction
- Copy message text
- Create a meetup from the message
- Reply to start a thread
- Pin the message
Replying to messages
Replies help keep conversations focused and easy to follow. There are two ways to reply: ‘Quick replies’ and ‘Threads’.
Quick replies
Quick replies let you respond directly to a single message. Your reply is sent as a new message that quotes the original one.
To send a quick reply:
- Press and hold a message to open the action menu
- Tap ‘Quick reply’
- The quoted message will appear above the message bar—type your response and tap ‘Send’
Tap the original message in a quick reply to jump back to it in the conversation. You can exit quick reply mode at any time by tapping the X.
Threads
Reply threads break off into a dedicated side conversation, making it easier to keep longer or more detailed discussions organized.
- The first three replies in a thread appear in the main chat
- If there are more replies, tap the message or ‘View all replies’ to see the full thread
- Only members participating in a thread will receive notifications for new replies
Replies to your messages and threads you’re part of will appear in your Activity Feed.
To start a reply thread:
- Tap a message and send your reply
- You’ll be taken to the thread view to continue the conversation
Mentions (Including @room)
To mention someone, type @ and start typing their name, then select them from the list.
To notify everyone in a room, type @room and tap the @room suggestion that appears (typing it without selecting the pop-up won’t trigger the mention).
Emoji Reactions
To react to a message:
- Press and hold the message and select an emoji
- Tap the + icon to browse more emoji options
- To remove your reaction, tap the emoji again.
To see who reacted to a message, press and hold the emoji to view the full list.
Pinning Messages
Pins make it easy to find important messages later. When a message is pinned, it’s pinned for everyone in the room and shows who pinned it. Pinned messages are visually highlighted in the chat and appear in the room’s pinned list.
To pin or unpin a message:
- Press and hold the message
- Tap ‘Pin’ or ‘Unpin’ from the action sheet
Note: If you don’t see the option to pin messages, you may not have permission in that group or room.
Viewing pinned messages:
- Open the room from the side menu
- Tap the room name at the top to open the room menu
- Tap the Pins icon to view all pinned messages
Pinned messages may also appear highlighted directly in the chat if they’re in view.
Events
You can create, view, and RSVP to events directly from a chat room or from the Events Calendar.
To create an event:
- Within a room in a Group, tap the Event icon in the message bar in a chat room or a post room to create an Event in a message
- Within the Events tab in a Group or My Events in your profile, tap the plus button in the lower left corner.
Polls
Anyone can create a poll in a chat or post room.
To create a poll:
- Tap the Poll button in the message bar
For more details on polls—including settings, voting, and results, see our dedicated article.
Files
To share a file in a Chat room:
- Tap the Files icon
- Tap Send once your file is uploaded
The maximum file size is 50 MB (roughly a 45-second video recorded on an iPhone).
