Subgroups help you organize members within your community. They make it easier to mention groups of people and give multiple members access to rooms at once.
For example, you might create subgroups for:
- Members in a specific location
- Teams or cohorts
- Different membership tiers
Instead of adding members to rooms one by one, you can add a subgroup to a room and everyone in that subgroup will automatically get access.
You can add members to a subgroup manually or through a subgroup invite link.
Note: Subgroups are different from Roles, which control member permissions within a group.

Anyone with the “Manage Subgroups” permission can create one. To create a subgroup:
- Open your Group Settings

- Press ‘Done’ to confirm

- Tap the ••• next to a subgroup
- Select ‘Invite people’ and then press ‘Share link’

Giving a subgroup access to a Room
When you add a subgroup to a room, all members in that subgroup get access.
If someone is removed from the subgroup, they will also lose access to rooms connected to it.
You can add a subgroup to a room when:
Creating a Room
- Tap + next to Rooms
- Choose the room type
- Add a name and description
- Choose room visibility:
- Open – anyone can see and join
- Locked – visible but invite-only
- Secret – only visible to invited member
- In Add Members, select the ‘Subgroups’ tab
- Choose the subgroup
From Room Settings
- Open the room
- Go to Room Settings
- Select ‘Room membership settings’
- Under ‘Subgroups’ press ‘Add’
- Choose which subgroups you’d like to add
- Tap ‘Add to room’
Removing a subgroup from a Room
Removing a subgroup removes all members added through that subgroup.
- Open the Room Settings
- Select ‘Room membership settings’
- Tap ••• next to the subgroup
- Select ‘Remove from room’
Mentioning a subgroup
You can notify everyone in a subgroup by mentioning it.
- Type @
- Start typing the subgroup name
- Select it from the list
Members in that subgroup will receive the mention in their activity feed and notifications (depending on their notification settings).
